The English Teachers of Japan hold bi-monthly meeting at the Cross-Cultural department at Sugiyama as well as the ETJ Chubu Expo every year. At the Expo the Green Team Interns play a big role in the planning and managing of this large conference that is held annually at Sugiyama Jogakuen University.

Every spring since 1991, the international community in the greater Nagoya area have come together at the Chubu Walkathon, an annual event primarily intended to support local charities for disadvantaged children. Over the past 25 years, more than a $1 million have been collected with the help of the many volunteers.

For two years running, Sugiyama Jogakuen University students have also experienced taking part in these volunteer activities, many of them for the first time. At the 2016 event, around 30 students proudly joined the organizers by selling tickets, helping to support the stage events, assisting at the booths of the various charities, and giving guidance and information to visitors. For those who joined, it was a productive and energizing way to reach out and become a part of the foreign community.

表現文化学科では、アニメやマンガが好きな人、アニメやマンガについて研究したい人たちの知的好奇心をくすぐる企画「アニメ・マンガ研究支援プロジェクト」が、2012年度より立ち上げられました。教員や学生がアニメやマンガについて研究・報告し合う「シンポジウム・座談会などの開催」や、研究成果を発信する「研究同人誌の発行」などを行います。

2015年6月13日、第10回シンポジウム『女の子が好きな女の子』が開催されました。シンポジウムでは、漫画「カードキャプターさくら」と女性漫画家集団「CLAMP」について学生2名が報告。その上で堀田あけみ教授が少女漫画を通して見えてくる新たな少女文化について紹介し、討論を行いました。

アニメやマンガについて「プロジェクト」として研究していこうとする動きは、名古屋の他の大学や他の学部・学科では見られないものです。 ぜひ表現文化学科に入学して、みんなで一緒に研究していきましょう。

2015年6月13日、本学部主催の国際文化フォーラム「物語の森に彷徨う私」が開催されました。

このフォーラムは、人間にとって最も重要なメディアである「ことば」、私たちにとっては日本語を多角的に考えてみようという観点から、小川雅魚教授が企画したもの。芥川賞作家の黒田夏子さんをはじめ7名のパネリストによる打合せなしのジャム・セッション形式で行われました。

今回のテーマは「私」。パネリスト全員が初めて使った「私」や「俺」など一人称の種類とその思い出を語ることからスタートし、地域や性別、背景によって様々な一人称が使われていることを紹介。その中で英語やフランス語など違う言語との対比により、一人称を通して日本語の奥深さに切り込んでいきました。
