President’s Greeting

Yoshihiko Kuroda
President, Sugiyama Jogakuen University
Sugiyama Jogakuen was founded in 1905 as a sewing school. Forty-four years later, Sugiyama Jogakuen University was established, which celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2019. Our university began as a single department college but has evolved over the years in response to changes in society and the educational needs of our students. Today the university has seven undergraduate and four graduate programs, among the largest numbers of such programs offered at universities for women in this country.

Since we started the university, we have provided individual tuition in classes which are deliberately kept small. This style of teaching helps each student realize her potential and achieve her personal goals. As a result, our graduates are highly regarded in Japanese society. We look forward to welcoming you to Sugiyama Jogakuen University. We believe you will enjoy the educational opportunities you will find here and foster deep friendships as well.

Our society is faced with many challenges, such as an aging population with a low birthrate, globalization, and an accelerating digital revolution. An ever-evolving education is vital, as educational demands emerge from these challenges. We will continue to make strident efforts to meet this ongoing necessity, keeping in mind our educational philosophy “Ningen ni Naro” (“Nurturing Humanity”).
